SMALL AXE : LOVERS ROCK (WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?)

Updated: Dec 17, 2020

Small Axe is a 5 episode mini series, focusing on the experiences of the West Indian community living in the UK šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ between the late 60ā€™s, 70ā€™s, and 80ā€™s.

The second episode entitledā€œLovers Rockā€, is also the name of the romantic sound/style of reggae, captured a night of where Jamaican born and of Jamaican decent meet at a house party. Where ā€œ Lovers Rockā€ is the soundtrack of the night events. Showcasing Lovers Rock songs that were hits in the late 70ā€™s and early 80ā€™s.

The main characters Franklyn (Micheal Ward) and Martha (Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn) portray a beautiful way to meet at a ā€œBlues Partyā€ (the name of a Londonā€™s Lovers Rock house party). In the midst of several events that actually could happen in present day at an house party.

Apart from the conflicting reviews from the UKā€™s audience on the authenticity of an official Blues Party, personally I really enjoyed it. This episode gave me a little visual insight of the Londonā€™s reggae scene in that era, from the sound system, the style of dress, and music that I grew up hearing my parents listening to. If you havenā€™t seen Lovers Rock as yet please check it out on Amazon Prime Video, if you have seen it please comment your thoughts below.
